About this tool

Word Counter & Readability analyses any block of text and returns a full set of content metrics: word count, character count (with and without spaces), sentence count, paragraph count, estimated reading time at 200 words per minute, and a Flesch Reading Ease score. The Flesch score rates text from 0–100 based on average sentence length and syllable count — higher scores mean easier reading. Scores above 60 are easily understood by most adults; below 30 requires university-level reading. Paste your content and adjust until your text hits the target readability for your audience.

How to use

  1. Paste or type your content into the text area.
  2. All metrics update automatically as you type.
  3. Check the Flesch Reading Ease score and adjust sentence length or vocabulary to hit your target audience level.

FAQ

What is the Flesch Reading Ease score?

The Flesch Reading Ease formula produces a score from 0 to 100 based on average sentence length and average number of syllables per word. Scores 70–80 are conversational and easy to read (general audience); 60–70 are standard (9th grade); 50–60 are fairly difficult (high school/college); below 30 are very difficult (academic/legal). Higher is easier to read.

How is reading time calculated?

Reading time is estimated at 200 words per minute — slightly below the average adult silent reading speed of 238 wpm — to give a conservative estimate. The calculation is: total words ÷ 200, rounded to the nearest 0.5 minute.

How can I improve my readability score?

Shorter sentences have the biggest impact. Break long sentences into two or three shorter ones. Use shorter, more common words instead of technical jargon where possible. Active voice typically produces shorter, clearer sentences than passive voice.

Does a higher word count help SEO?

Content length alone is not a ranking factor. However, comprehensive content that thoroughly covers a topic naturally tends to be longer and earns more links and engagement — which does correlate with rankings. Focus on answering the query completely; word count follows naturally.

Is my text sent to a server?

No. All counting and scoring calculations run entirely in your browser using JavaScript. Your content is never transmitted or stored anywhere.
