FAQ
What is a time zone and why do they differ?
Time zones are regions of the Earth that observe the same standard time. They are offset from UTC (Coordinated Universal Time) to reflect the local solar time. For example, IST (India Standard Time) is UTC+5:30, meaning it is 5 hours and 30 minutes ahead of UTC.
What does UTC stand for?
UTC stands for Coordinated Universal Time. It is the primary time standard by which the world regulates clocks and time. It is not adjusted for daylight saving time. All other time zones are expressed as an offset from UTC (e.g. EST is UTC−5, IST is UTC+5:30).
Does this tool handle Daylight Saving Time (DST)?
Yes. The converter uses the browser's built-in Intl.DateTimeFormat API which applies DST rules automatically based on the IANA timezone database. So EST becomes EDT during US summer, and the conversions remain accurate throughout the year.
Why are some US timezones listed twice (e.g. EST and CST)?
EST (Eastern), CST (Central), MST (Mountain), and PST (Pacific) are the four main US time zones, each covering a different region of the country. They are listed separately so you can compare across all US regions at once.
What is IST?
IST stands for India Standard Time, which is UTC+5:30. India uses a single timezone across the entire country and does not observe Daylight Saving Time. IST is 5 hours and 30 minutes ahead of UTC and 10.5 hours ahead of PST (US Pacific Standard Time).
